Pilots maintain radio contact with marine traffic below, adjusting routes when commercial dive vessels anchor at popular sites. Weather minimums require three kilometres visibility and cloud ceilings above 600 metres; cancellations cluster during the December-to-March wet season when afternoon thunderstorms build rapidly over the Coral Sea. The outer reef's exposure to open ocean means swell conditions visible from the air often exceed two metres, creating white-water channels between reef platforms that inland visitors never witness. Flight durations range from 30 minutes for Agincourt Reef passes to 90 minutes for extended Osprey Reef transits, with every route calibrated to fuel reserves and daylight margins.
